We needed a set of base gaskets to go between rear light units and the bodywork on a Lotus Elan S1. Not difficult you might think. But not completely straightforward either, as it turns out.





The rear indicator lights on the car are Lucas L539 and the tail/stop lights are Lucas L551. Holden

I was reminded of the 911 TR recently, not least by some of the adverts for the new Carrera T showing it alongside a 911 T. Fifty years ago, with the 911 R classed as a prototype, something closer to the regular production models was needed to compete in touring car and GT racing and rallying. Peter Gregg's class win in the season-opening 1967 Daytona Trans-Am - see the separate post on the subject - was celebrated in a Porsche Panorama piece in March of the same year. The article suggests Gregg had sold the car, but borrowed it back for the race. The prep seemingly consisted of a straight-through exhaust and re-jetted carbs, a 100 litre tank, Koni shocks and a rear anti-roll bar, a limited slip diff, 6 inch American Racing rims and CDI ignition. I researched the history of an early 911 a year or two back. It was a spring 1965 car in light ivory ordered through the celebrated Brumos dealership in Jacksonville, Florida. More recently, it found its way to the UK and, mindful of its connections, the new owner was curious as to whether it might have had a period competition history.
